Josephsohn / Märkli
A Conjunction

September 30 - January 1, 2018

Somerset

Hauser & Wirth Somerset is pleased to present an exhibition of works by the late Swiss sculptor Josephsohn (1920 – 2012) alongside the architectural drawings of his long-time friend, Swiss architect Peter Märkli (born 1953). Taking its name from ‘La Congiunta’, an isolated museum designed by Märkli to house a number of Josephsohn’s bronze sculptures, the exhibition, curated by Niall Hobhouse, examines the intense and longstanding collaboration between these two powerful creative minds, exploring what two very different disciplines – sculpture and architecture – can offer the other as insight, and about the generosity and humanity of such an exchange. The exhibition brings together a selection of Josephsohn’s sculptures produced throughout his 60 year-long artistic career, as well as some of the artist’s works on paper, alongside a series of drawings by Peter Märkli. The material includes both artists’ early efforts to find distinctive creative voices.

Bookbinding Workshop

This one day workshop exploring book making provides you with the perfect space to practice your drawings inspired by the exhibition ‘Josephsohn / Märkli. A Conjunction’ or create a special gift to give to your loved ones this Christmas. During the workshop, each of the participants will have the opportunity to make a concertina structured hardback book using bookbinding tools and techniques. This is a versatile form of bookmaking that enables the book to be opened and extended as a freestanding potential platform for display or a portable installation that can be viewed in the round. Using a variety of paper stock, in colour weight and texture, a visual narrative can be created through a combination of paper engineering, folding and collage. Apertures can be cut through pages to create layered viewpoints of the book’s compositional content. The concertina book can also be held and activated for more direct physical viewing or reading interactivity. The tactile nature of these books can also be emphasised by various page surface and edge treatments. The workshop is led by Guy Begbie who is an interdisciplinary artist, bookbinder, lecturer at UWE, Bristol and artist’s book workshop provider. In his current arts practice he investigates the activated fold and the dérive. This is realised through printmaking and free standing architectural book forms. He has recently been the recipient of the ‘Manly Library Artists Book Award 2017’ Sydney, Australia and has been an artist in residence in three Australian Universities. He delivered the Siganto Foundation Artists’ Book Lecture and Masterclass 2016 at the State Library of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia and exhibited his work in February 2017 at ‘CODE X: Contemporary Fine Bindings’, Craft ACT: Canberra, Australia. Tickets are £90 and include lunch in the Roth Bar & Grill.
