This year’s Education Lab, ‘Bitacora,’ at Hauser & Wirth Menorca is developed in collaboration with the University of the Balearic Islands and the University of Barcelona. The student-led program nurtures national connectivity between the universities, exploring what learning looks like beyond an institutional setting and facilitating a launchpad for creating, sharing and collaborative research. Responding to the themes of the group exhibition ‘Directionless,’ the Education Lab echoes the very concept set by Rashid Johnson, to find new creative pathways and orientations through artistic practice.
Drawing on current thinking in creative pedagogy and experimental learning, the Education Lab offers an interactive space for new ideas and working methods. Peer-led development sessions began in April between MA Art Production students at University of Barcelona and BA Primary and Infant Teaching students at University of the Balearic Islands. Zoom and physical sessions were centered around masterclasses from the exhibition’s artist selection, allowing for first-hand professional practice and critical thinking between both cohorts. Part of the project also included the opportunity for the Barcelona-based MA students to be in residence in Mahon, allowing for cultural visits in the area and formative sessions at the gallery with the team. Learning as a group off site, putting their knowledge into action and reflection, as well as deepening their understanding of the rich history and significance of Illa del Rei.
The outcome will be an interactive Education Lab, comprising the intellectual journey of the participants, demonstrating their methods of interpretation of the exhibition—it will provide opportunities for interaction and making so that every visitor can take part and invites a wide range of voices and communities to participate throughout the season.
The Education Lab is part of Hauser & Wirth’s commitment to inclusive learning programs that instigate a dialogue between art, artists and diverse audiences. Located at our galleries in Menorca, Somerset and Downtown Los Angeles each Education Lab is a collaboration with a local community group, school or university.

About Directionless
Opening this summer, ‘Directionless’ is a sweeping group exhibition organized by artist Rashid Johnson. The project begins with the premise that we are living in a moment of profound disorientation. This is a time when inherited narratives, stable identities, and the systems that once structured social and aesthetic life feel increasingly insufficient. Rather than offering resolution, the exhibition asks how artists productively inhabit this uncertainty—how they develop new vocabularies and provisional orientations when established coordinates fail.
To build a sense of indeterminacy and openness into the exhibition’s structure, Johnson invited Charles Gaines, Firelei Báez, and Cristina Iglesias to each nominate artists from outside the gallery’s roster alongside his own selections. This artist-driven, polyphonic approach refuses singular narratives, instead proposing that creative practice itself might be a form of orientation-making in an illegible present. The artist list includes: Firelei Báez, Georg Baselitz, Ali Cherri, Claire Chambless, Rineke Dijkstra, Latifa Echakhch, Teresita Fernández, Sally Gabori, Charles Gaines, Todd Gray, Alteronce Gumby, Hugh Hayden, Leslie Hewitt, Hanna Hur, Cristina Iglesias, Michael Joo, Sigalit Landau, Hannah Levy, Julie Mehretu, Joiri Minaya, Wangechi Mutu, Mona Hatoum, Lyle Ashton Harris, Rashid Johnson, Lorna Simpson, Rayyane Tabet, Meg Webster, and Yto Barrada.
