Join us to celebrate the opening of a new exhibition at Stockwell House by Bruton-based letterpress artist and designer Kelvyn Laurence Smith.

‘[Re] Covering—a Typo/Graphic Intervention’ is a graphic presentation of recovered and redesigned second-hand book jackets, curated from the collection at Bailey Hill Bookshop in Castle Cary.

The project is part of Somerset Art Weeks Festival 2026, exploring the diversity of artists and makers across the UK, organized by Somerset Art Works.

The exhibition is on view from 18 September – 4 October 2026. Visit the gallery Wednesday – Saturday, 11 am – 4 pm.

About Kelvyn Laurence Smith
Kelvyn Laurence Smith is a British letterpress artist and designer whose practice explores the relationship between language, typography and the material process of print. His work embodies the enduring relevance of letterpress as a contemporary medium, demonstrating how traditional methods can continue to communicate new ideas with clarity, wit and visual impact.

The resurgence of letterpress over recent decades has fostered a renewed appreciation for typography as both a craft and an art form. As an antidote to the immediacy and disposability of digital culture, the deliberate pace and physical discipline of letterpress printing invite both maker and viewer to engage more deeply with the craft of making and power of the printed word.

Smith co-established his first Letterpress Workshop in Westland Place, Old Street, London, before relocating to Iliffe Yard in Kennington, London, where the studio flourished for more than a decade. In 2018, the workshop was re-established in Bruton, Somerset, where he continues to design, set and print works using an extensive collection of historic wood and metal type. Alongside his studio practice, Smith previously held academic positions at several universities and art schools across the UK, and continues to deliver specialist workshops for designers, art directors and creative professionals. Smith collaborates with a range of cultural organizations and private clients, producing bespoke typographic commissions, identities, publications and limited-edition prints.
