In Performance: Violinist Amelia Sze on ‘Zhang Enli’

Friday 29 May
6.30 – 7 pm
Register

On the occasion of the opening night of ‘Zhang Enli,’ the artist’s first solo presentation on the West Coast, join us for a live musical performance by violinist Amelia Sze.

Drawing on both Eastern and Western traditions, Zhang pushes toward a looser visual language in order to reveal abstraction’s power to communicate the human condition. Sze’s performance within the exhibition will seek to echo and deepen the atmosphere and emotional resonance of Zhang’s new works, fostering a contemplative dialogue between sound, gesture, and abstraction.

Signed copies of the new exhibition publication, featuring a survey of Zhang’s artistic evolution over the past two decades, will also be available during the reception.

Please join us before and after the performance for the opening reception from 6 – 8 pm. This event is free to attend, however, reservations are recommended. Click here to register.

About the exhibition
Zhang Enli has used painting to document the more prosaic aspects of contemporary life—everyday objects, interiors and individuals—since his arrival on the Shanghai art scene in the 1990s. The exhibition presents a new body of abstract portraits and marks the artist’s first solo presentation on the West Coast. While anchored in figuration and paired with descriptive titles, the works convey the essence of their subjects via evocation. Drawing on both Eastern and Western traditions, Zhang pushes toward a looser visual language in order to reveal abstraction’s power to communicate the human condition.

About the publication
Published on the occasion of an exhibition of the artist’s work at our West Hollywood gallery, this elegantly designed publication explores the last two decades of Zhang Enli’s celebrated practice, culminating in his most recent paintings.

Beginning in the 1990s with the artist’s striking portraits of human figures, 'Zhang Enli' traces the development of the artist’s work through the evocative object studies of the 2000s and early 2010s to the captivating abstract portraits that continue to occupy him today, including new paintings produced for our Los Angeles exhibition. An illuminating essay by curator Sook Kyung-Lee guides readers through Zhang’s artistic evolution, illustrated by a generous selection of artwork reproductions that showcase the extraordinary lyricism of the artist’s work.
