Basque Cultural Festival

  • Fri 22 – Sat 23 October 2021
  • 6.30 – 6 pm

Throughout his artistic career, Eduardo Chillida remained deeply connected to the identity of his native Basque region. The weekend festivities invite audiences of all ages to become immersed in an entirely Basque experience, gaining a greater appreciation for this unique corner of the world and its proud heritage. Through traditional music and dance, visitors will be encouraged to create new encounters with important themes central to Chillida’s work.

This series of special events is part of a cultural exchange between Hauser & Wirth Somerset and Chillida Leku, a sculpture park and museum established by the artist during his lifetime located in Hernani, just outside the seaside town of San Sebastian.

Having regularly performed at Chillida Leku, we are thrilled to host the renowned Basque music group, Oreka TX and dance company, Kukai for performances within the galleries, Radic Pavilion and outdoor landscape. Both Oreka TX and Kukai have established rich artistic dialogues, recognised for fusing historical Basque traditions with distinctive contemporary influences.

Head chefs from Chillida Leku’s Lurra Cafe will be in residence at Durslade Farm, collaborating with Roth Bar & Grill on Basque-inspired menus. Enjoy all the distinctive flavours and foods of the Basque region, including hot and cold ‘pintxos’ (small plates) and traditional outdoor cooking over grills and robatas. A full range of Basque wines will be available to try on the terrace throughout the weekend.
