Conversations on Collecting: The Historical Collection – Elizabeth Courtauld by Deborah Swallow

To coincide with the exhibition, ‘Unconscious Landscape. Works from the Ursula Hauser Collection’, we are holding a series of events around the topic of collecting. Join Professor Deborah Swallow for a special talk on female collectors in the Courtauld family. Since 2004, Deborah has been Märit Rausing Director of The Courtauld Institute of Art, the world's pre-eminent centre for paintings conservation, curation and the study of the history of art. As an independent college of the University of London, The Courtauld Institute of Art brings together exceptional teaching and research with an internationally renowned fine art gallery. Swallow was previously Keeper of the Asian Department and Director of Collections at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. After taking a first degree in English literature, a year teaching in India gave Swallow a deep interest in the arts, culture and religion of the Subcontinent, initially explored through the discipline of social anthropology and subsequently as a curator within the context of the art museum. She continues to work on issues relating to the arts and cultural heritage in contemporary India. Swallow is a Trustee of Asia House, the Helen Hamlyn Trust, and the Nehru Trust for the Indian Collections in the V&A. She was previously a Trustee of The Art Fund.
