Somerset Summer Workshop: Willow Basket Making

  • Fri 8 August 2014
  • 10 am – 5 pm

During this one-day workshop led by Rebecca Board, you will be introduced to a variety of essential weaves and techniques to create your own unique basket. There will be a choice of stripped and unstripped Somerset grown willow to work with including triandra ‘Black Maul’ from the Somerset levels and greeny brown barked varieties of Salix purpurea from the tutor’s own withy bed. We will concentrate on making round baskets, which is a really good introduction to willow work. At the end of the day you will have a completed basket to take away with you. Beginners are welcome and all materials are provided. Rebecca Board makes baskets using varieties of willow as well as rushes, hedgerow and garden woods. She grows and / or gathers many of the materials she uses herself. Although willow is the main material she uses, she is particularly interested in the wide variety of different plant materials that can be used for weaving, and enjoys putting together combinations of weaves, to reflect the rhythms and patterns found in nature. She enjoys sharing this knowledge with interested groups, and has over twenty years experience of teaching basket-making techniques.
