Hauser & Wirth returns to ART021 Shanghai with a solo work booth of Lee Bul. With its crystalline, fragmented form, ‘Untitled Sculpture (W3)’ (2010) is a variation of Lee Bul’s renowned Sternbau series where she utilizes architectural structures to explore the enduring themes of utopian modernity and the rise and fall of progressivist projects.
The work is an intricate mirrored structure, creating a maze-like space inside and innumerable splintered reflections of the viewer. Disorienting and unsettling, the use of mirror is to distort rather than to reflect reality. ‘You look into the mirror, and you recognize yourself very quickly. You are instinctively self-aware. But if that reflection is infinitely reflected and fragmented, would people continue to accept the image of themselves just as naturally?’
The traveling museum exhibition ‘Lee Bul: From 1998 to Now’, co-organised by Leeum Museum of Art and M+ in collaboration with M HKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp) in Antwerp, Belgium, opens on13 November 2026 through 7 March 2027.
