Friday 15 May

On the occasion of Frank Bowling’s June 2026 solo exhibition ‘Like Water’, Hauser & Wirth Learning continues its partnership with The Bridge+, a Hong Kong-based social enterprise, to deliver a day of creative workshops inspired by Frank Bowling, for children and their families in Sham Shui Po.

Led by Susi Sahmland, Head of Educational Outreach for Frank Bowling Studio, the workshops aim to broaden access to art, introduce participants to his processes, techniques and materials and inspire creative responses to Bowling’s work.

Building on a partnership that began with the Mark Bradford Education Lab in 2024, Hauser & Wirth Learning and The Bridge+ continue to create opportunities for exchange between our artists, exhibitions and local audiences. The activities form part of a broader program of Learning initiatives and resources focused on Frank Bowling’s work and exhibitions, driven by a shared passion for learning by the artist and the gallery.

Taking place on Saturday 13 June 2026 from 11 am – 1 pm and 3 – 5 pm, the workshops will begin with a short introduction to Frank Bowling’s life and work, using images and prompts to support interaction. A guided painting activity will encourage the children to experiment with materials and colour, explore the properties of paint through pouring and spraying and embrace assemblage by embedding small objects and glitter within their compositions. The sessions will conclude with a reflective moment where participants share their work and consider titles for their paintings, supported by examples from the exhibition. A translator will be active throughout the workshops to encourage communication and engagement.

About ‘Frank Bowling. Like Water’
Opening in June 2026 in Hong Kong, the gallery will present Bowling’s first solo exhibition in East Asia, bringing together a selection of historical and recent works that showcase Bowling’s mastery of surface texture. The exhibition will be on view from 11 June – 29 August 2026.

About Frank Bowling
For over six decades, Frank Bowling has relentlessly pursued a practice which boldly expands the possibilities and properties of paint. Ambitious in scale and scope, his dynamic engagement with the materiality of his chosen medium, and its evolution in the broad sweep of art history, has resulted in paintings of unparalleled originality and power. Bowling has been hailed as one of the foremost British artists of his generation. Born in British Guiana (now Guyana) in 1934, he arrived in London, UK in 1953, graduating from the Royal College of Art with the silver medal for painting in 1962. By the early 1960s, he was recognized as an assured force in London’s art scene. During this period, his highly individual language of painting, which emerged from expressionistic figuration and pop art, encompassed autobiographical elements and the artist’s socio-political concerns.
