The first volume of the catalogue raisonné for contemporary Chinese artist Zeng Fanzhi is now available. Focusing on the first twenty years of the artist’s career, this landmark publication is the culmination of a six-year-long research project, drawing from a wide range of sources and documentation and presented according to international scholarly methodology.

Chronologically illustrating every recorded work between 1984 – 2004, ‘Zeng Fanzhi Catalogue raisonné. Volume I’ is by far the most comprehensive record of the artist’s oeuvre.

A number of previously unknown and unregistered paintings offer new perspectives to understanding the art of Zeng Fanzhi.

Edited by Gladys Chung, the publication features essays by Philipe Dagen, Tsong-Zung Chang, and Fumio Nanjo which further illuminate Zeng Fanzhi’s multifaceted body of work.

The catalogue raisonné is a definitive scholarly research tool for collectors, scholars and art professionals, including detailed annotations, worldwide literature, and exhibition records as well as never-before-published archival materials.

Readers can trace thematic developments over the course of Zeng Fanzhi’s career, such as the early Hospital (1991 – 92) and Meat (1992 – 94) series which garnered international acclaim and later Mask (1994 – 2004) series.

‘Using key archival resources, the book covers the initial powerful paintings that brought Zeng Fanzhi to global fame, such as the Hospital, Meat and Mask series,’ says writer and curator David Anfam, who authored ‘Mark Rothko: The Works on Canvas – Catalogue Raisonné’ (1998).

‘Above all, the spirit of Zeng Fanzhi’s many-sided vision comes across as the successive images unfold. They feel by turns poignant, enigmatic, thought-provoking, and more.’
