Marc Payot named President of Hauser & Wirth and New Gallery Partners Announced

10 January 2020

New Partners: Stacen Berg, Florian Berktold, Cristopher Canizares, Barbara Corti, James Koch, Mirella Roma, Graham Steele and Neil Wenman

We are pleased to share the news that Marc Payot is now President of Hauser & Wirth alongside Co-Presidents Iwan Wirth and Manuela Wirth. Since joining the gallery 20 years ago, Payot has been central in establishing Hauser & Wirth’s presence in the United States and worldwide.

Based in New York City, Payot has led the gallery’s activities in America since 2009, and is spearheading its expansion in the decade ahead, including the inauguration in spring 2020 of Hauser & Wirth’s first purpose-built building, on West 22nd Street in Chelsea, a storied street in the history of American modern and contemporary art.

In addition to Marc Payot’s new role, we are pleased to announce eight new Partners: Stacen Berg, Florian Berktold, Cristopher Canizares, Barbara Corti, James Koch, Mirella Roma, Graham Steele and Neil Wenman, all long-standing members of the gallery’s global team. These individuals work closely with the gallery’s roster of artists and estates to support their creative vision; build extraordinary relationships with international institutions, curators, collectors, scholars and educators; help to shape the worldwide program of exhibitions, events and fair participation; and lead team members across Hauser & Wirth’s nine locations in Europe, the United States and Asia.

‘With these announcements, we recognize and celebrate the invaluable role our senior team members play through their dedication, passion, and leadership,’ Iwan Wirth explains. ‘As we enter a new phase, we reinforce our commitment to sharing the future success of the gallery with the global family who are working alongside us to create it.’

Marc Payot joined Hauser & Wirth in 2000 and has worked alongside Iwan and Manuela Wirth for two decades. Named Partner and Vice President of Hauser & Wirth in 2004, Payot moved to New York City four years later to establish its presence in America. Since opening the gallery’s first US space in an historic Upper East Side townhouse in 2009, Payot has overseen the creation of two spaces in the West Chelsea arts district and the opening of Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles in 2016. He is now leading the creation of Hauser & Wirth’s first purpose-built gallery building, designed by Annabelle Selldorf, at 542 West 22nd Street.

Under Payot’s leadership, the gallery has grown its philanthropic and community outreach programs in the US, including a five-year commitment and million-dollar donation to Cal State LA. He has been instrumental in developing Hauser & Wirth’s roster of artists as part of an overall vision to expand the narrative of modern and contemporary art history to be more inclusive. Payot has also reconfigured and expanded Hauser & Wirth’s secondary market activity, recreating the function of the gallery’s East 69th Street townhouse as a destination for historical exhibitions and art research.

‘Marc’s shared vision, expertise, and friendship contribute immeasurably to the ongoing success of Hauser & Wirth for our artists and estates, and our team,’ says Manuela Wirth. ‘Marc works in constant dialogue with Iwan and me as the gallery has expanded over the years from its origins as a family business. We look forward to continuing to shape the ethos of Hauser & Wirth together.’
