About the Artist

Born in Brühl, Germany, Max Ernst (1891 – 1976) is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century. A key part of a wide network of global avant-garde artists, writers, poets and collectors, Ernst worked across Germany, France and the United States, becoming a central figure of the dada and surrealist movements. After fighting in the First World War, Ernst returned to Cologne in 1918 where he founded the Cologne branch of dada. In 1922, he moved to Paris, later joining the surrealists. When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, Ernst’s works were among those subjected to defamation by the National Socialists and in 1937 were included in the ‘Degenerate Art’ exhibition. Ernst left the surrealists in 1938 and was interned several times as an ‘Enemy Alien’ after the outbreak of the Second World War, but escaped to Portugal and eventually emigrated to the United States in 1941. In 1951, he returned to Paris, living there until his death in April 1976.
