Join us in the open-air courtyard for a series of public performances and activations on Gary Simmons’ sculptural installation ‘Recapturing Memories of the Black Ark’ (2014 – ongoing). Both a literal and metaphorical platform for conversations, music, and performance, this work is inspired by Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s studio and is comprised of amalgamated materials sourced from the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Originally shown as part of the 2014 Prospect.3 biennial in New Orleans, ‘Black Ark’ has been presented at Art Basel Unlimited, Miami, art space Southern Exposure in San Francisco, and Desert X in Coachella Valley, California. Each iteration of the installation draws upon the local network of creatives to activate the stage with ongoing performances, which are recorded and continuously added to a film that follows future installations.
