Brave New Animation Workshop

With the fast moving change in technology, producing high definition animated content on a mobile phone or tablet is now a possibility. It has become easy and relatively cheap for anyone to experiment and explore the concept of stop frame animation. This workshop led by award winning animator David Daniels will give participants a taste of stop frame animation, storytelling, concept of time and movement. Inspired by current exhibition ‘Brave New World’ by Djordje Ozbolt, objects can be literally brought to life, with reference to the previous shot frame, while the camera can also be used as a time-lapse device. Within a matter of minutes the user can see results and begin to dip their toe into the world of animation. At the end of the session, attendees will be given advice on how such work can be taken further. All attendees will need to bring a phone or iPad / tablet, so they can be introduced to using these devices for animation, and will need to download the correct software; this can be done during the session, and will involve an additional cost: For iphone / imac : 1) iMotion, the full version is £2.99 2) StopFrame Studio, full version £3.99 3) iStop Motion, this is a bit more advanced, iPhone version is free, iPad £8.99. David Daniels is an award winning animator and designer whose work covers a wide range of projects and clients, from directing TV commercials for Honda, The Co-Op Bank, to animated projections for live concerts by Led Zeppelin, Roger Waters and Bryan Adams. Plus animated films for The Science Museum and broadcast graphics for BBC, Channel 4 and VH-1 Television. He has also directed documentaries for BBC2 and The Discovery Channel. Recent projects has seen the animation of the Bach Goldberg Variations which is currently being performed live with Frome based pianist John Law. A retrospective of his personal animated music based films were shown at the Museo de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain in 2011. David is a visiting Lecturer at the LCC in London, the Norwich School of Art, and John Moore’s University in Liverpool.
