‘What Are Gardens For?’ Julian and Isobel Bannerman: In Search of Wonderland

What is it that lifts a garden above being more than a sum of its parts? That allusive, dreamlike quality that adds romance, mystery and depth? It is a quest that Julian and Isabel Bannerman have been on since they started designing together in the 1980s. Drawing on extensive references, from history and poetry, to literature, art and ancient landscapes, the couple have designed gardens great and small that feel like they have always been in the place where they sit so comfortably: from the gardens at Highgrove to their own at Trematon Castle in Cornwall. Here they talk about their unique approach to garden design. What Are Gardens For? is a series of talks curated by Caroline Donald, Garden Editor of the Sunday Times. Tickets £12
