In Zurich: Geta Brătescu and Albert Kriemler’s Collaboration

This autumn we are celebrating continuing influence of the work of Geta Brătescu in two special presentations in Zurich, opening 22 October 2020. Hauser & Wirth Publishers have collaborated with the Swiss fashion house Akris and its Creative Director Albert Kriemler to create a unique display of materials from their archive specially selected by Kriemler. Kriemler has long been inspired by the work of Brătescu and collaborated with the artist and Marian Ivan of Ivan Gallery for Akris’ Spring/Summer 2019 collection.

Akris collaboration with Geta Brătescu

The Spring/Summer 2019 collection by Swiss fashion house Akris is a unique collaboration between Akris creative director Albert Kriemler, Romanian artist Geta Brătescu and Marian Ivan of Ivan Gallery. Albert Kriemler discovered the artist’s work at documenta in Athens and Kassel, and was inspired by her bold use of color, line, and relationship to paper. Kriemler remarked how ‘Geta’s feeling for selecting paper is very similar to how I select fabric. Fabric teaches me so much, and, like paper, it’s a beautiful material – it has a haptic quality.’

Geta Brătescu: Art is a Serious Game

A studio visit and interview with artist Geta Brătescu, forerunner in the field of Romanian Conceptualism. On the occasion of her 90th birthday, the Hamburger Kunsthalle arranged a comprehensive survey drawing together key works and work series spanning over six decades. Memory and history, processes of historical sedimentation and organic growth, conformity and deviation, self-inquiry and self-assertion are themes Brătescu has worked with and reviewed again and again in the course of her long artistic career.

Interview with Geta Brătescu

For most of her career Geta Brătescu worked under communism in Romania. Brătescu studied at the Faculty of Letters and the Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest, where her master teacher was Camil Ressu.
