Utopia / Dystopia: Placebos, Nocebos and Voodoo Medicine

For this fall’s second installment of Utopia / Dystopia, an ongoing series co-presented with Morbid Anatomy, please join Dr. Mark W Green, Professor of Neurology, Anesthesiology, and Rehabilitation Medicine at Mount Sinai to explore the fascinating history and science of the placebo, the nocebo, and ‘voodoo death.’ Dr. Green will discuss the nuances and differences of placebos and its opposite ‘nocebos,’ an inactive substance whose consumption causes harm through psychological or psychosomatic influence. Dr. Mark W. Green is the Director of Headache and Pain Medicine and Professor of Neurology, Anesthesiology, and Rehabilitation Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is the Vice Chair of Neurology for Professional Development and Alumni Relations. He is certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, were he is a fellow, and in Headache Medicine through the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties. Dr. Green was one of the founding editors of CEPHALAGIA, the international headache journal. He also served as the Associate Editor of HEADACHE, the journal of the American Headache Society. He has a long-standing interest in neuropharmacology and has been a panel member of the Advisory Board of the Food and Drug Administration’s Section on Peripheral and Central Neurological Drugs.
