Join us for a hands-on Family Studio exploring themes from ‘Ellen Gallagher. Accidental Records.’ About the Studio Working with colorful, air-drying clay and paint sticks on black paper, families will come together to create their own 3-D seascapes inspired by texturally complex paintings by Ellen Gallagher. Like Gallagher’s poetic and surprising works that merge paper, rubber and paint, families will be encouraged to explore their own visions of the ocean’s depths through layered abstractions. The workshop will be led by Matt MacFarland. About ‘Ellen Gallagher. Accidental Records’ Comprising a suite of new works that includes paintings and drawings, the exhibition finds Ellen Gallagher returning to and building upon themes and motifs at the center of her practice. These works extend her exploration of the complex histories of the Black Atlantic and the afterlives of the Middle Passage. Widely acclaimed for her own genre of history painting, Gallagher questions accepted geographies. The layered surfaces of her works become a kind of reckoning, evoking, in the artist’s words, ‘the way sailors mark their location at sea, determined by return.’ This event is free, however, reservations are recommended. Click here to register.
