One World is a new work by Mark Wallinger co-commissioned by Liverpool Biennial and 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary.

What's the strangest thing that's ever happened to you? Chances are, it's not nearly as weird as Mark Wallinger's – an incident that involved an art gallery, a photographer, and a stranger dressed as a bear.

“SO, MARK,” I say to the Turner Prize-winning artist sitting in front of me.

In partnership with Amnesty International and the Turner Prize winning artist Mark Wallinger, the Ecce Homo sculpture, which was the first to appear on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square in 1999, will stand at the top of the west steps of the Cathedral.

To celebrate its 150th anniversary of the London Underground, Mark Wallinger created a major new commission for Art on the Underground, a multi-part work on a huge scale installed in every one of the Tube’s 270 stations. A unique opportunity to explore the potential of the Underground as a whole, and forging a poetic link with the Tube’s rich history of graphic language, Wallinger's work sits comfortably alongside the two of its major design icons, the roundel and Harry Beck’s Tube map, and yet stands out as a new symbol marking the Tube’s 150th year.

Mark Wallinger completed his MA at Goldsmiths College, where he would later go on to teach students including Damien Hirst. In 1999 Mark became the first artist to produce a commissioned work for Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth and in 2001 he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale. Here Mark talks about this experience and about some of the works that came out of it, including the 2006 Turner Prize winning Tate commission 'State Britain'.
