Throughout October, Hauser & Wirth held events for The Big Draw Festival 2022 across 8 of our locations around the world. Chillida Leku, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Menorca, Monaco, Somerset and Zurich all offered free creative activities for families, schools and communities that engaged with drawing and responded to the collective theme ‘Come Back to Colour.’ The theme invited participants to rediscover the vitality and vibrancy in everyone’s lives after what has been a challenging few years.

In 2020, Amy Sherald painted the portrait of Breonna Taylor for the historic cover of Vanity Fair magazine. Renowned for her documentation of the contemporary Black experience, Sherald always intended for the work to live beyond the date of the September 2020 issue, and to contribute to causes of social justice. The acquisition of the painting by the Ford Foundation and the Hearthland Foundation in 2021 enabled her to realize both.

This fall, do not miss the debut of Hauser & Wirth artists’ new, immersive, and historic work in galleries and museums across Los Angeles, one of the most vibrant art cities in the world. From Mid-City to Downtown, explore spellbinding video installations by Pipilotti Rist, get lost in abstracted sculptural forms by Paul McCarthy, experience new video works by Diana Thater, and witness Amy Sherald’s historic portrait of the first lady Mrs. Michelle Obama, before it travels to its next destination in The Obama Portraits Tour.

We are thrilled to introduce ‘Artists for New York’, a major initiative to raise funds in support of a group of pioneering non-profit visual arts organizations across New York City that have been profoundly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Guest edited by Ta-Nehisi Coates, the issue explores art, activism, and power in 21st century America. The project features the work of more than 40 prominent writers, photographers, artists, and activists, including some of the most influential Black voices of our time.

Artist’s Choice Summer Film Series is a program of free evening film screenings that will take place on the rooftop of the Hauser & Wirth New York, 22nd Street in June and July.

Amy Sherald paints portraits of everyday African Americans she encounters on the street, in the grocery store, on the bus. Yet her subjects embody the ineffable quality of ‘existing in a place of the past, the present, and the future.’

Based in Baltimore MD, Amy Sherald documents contemporary African-American experience in the United States through arresting, otherworldly portraits, often working from photographs of strangers she encounters on the streets.
