Alberto Giacometti’s lifelong connection to his Swiss roots
Ursula presents a new short film produced alongside the exhibition Alberto Giacometti: Faces and Landscapes of Home at Hauser & Wirth St. Moritz. Featuring the voices of curator Tobia Bezzola and filmmaker Susanna Fanzun, this short film illuminates the artist’s enduring ties to the place that shaped his early life and sustained his creative practice—the remote Bregaglia Valley in Switzerland.
The son of a leading modernist painter, Giovanni Giacometti, Alberto’s early works include intimate portrayals of his family and the alpine surroundings. Giacometti’s distinct artistic language was formed between mountain landscape and the restless intensity of Paris. In the French metropolis, Giacometti’s practice evolved in close dialogue with the avant-garde, leading to the development of his visionary elongated figures through which he explored figuration and the human condition.
“He grows up between two worlds—between a very traditional rural community and the European art world, which would remain with him throughout his life.”—Tobia Bezzola

“He was deeply and utterly connected to the valley and the people and he carried that enduring sense of belonging wherever his travels took him.”—Susanna Fanzun
Giacometti’s frequently returned to his childhood home, including his wood-panelled atelier in Stampa, where he produced numerous works included in the exhibition in St Moritz. Away from the busy Paris art world, Giacometti’s private world is reflected in the intimate images by Swiss photographer Ernst Scheidegger, a close friend of the artist.
Spanning painting, drawing and sculpture, the St Moritz exhibition of works by Giacometti reflect an attention to both the human figure and the terrain that surrounds it. The intensity and psychological depth of Giacometti’s oeuvre is brought into focus in these deeply personal portraits and views of home.
