The garden, a certified Wildlife Habitat as recognized by the National Wildlife Federation, is an oasis within the burgeoning Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. Featuring a chicken coop and beds of herbs and vegetables, which support the onsite restaurant, Manuela – this space aims to integrate community with urban food production and sustainability. The serene and contemplative environment is surrounded by an abundance of street art murals, which have been kept in their original locations, creating a juxtaposition of the site’s local history with its new life. The open-air courtyard and garden won the 2019 Landscape Architecture category of the 49th Los Angeles Architectural Awards.

Learning at Los Angeles

Learning

At Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles, learning and community engagement are centered around three pillars: community, academic, and career access. The community projects involve local groups, aiming at harder-to reach- demographics. The academic centers around schools and students, while career access bring young people into the gallery’s orbit so they can garner experiences for a job in the arts.

Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles Learning programs aim to instigate a dialogue between the works on view and our diverse audiences – artists, downtown residents, community partners, students, and faculty of Southern California schools and academic institutions.

As a pioneering, multipurpose art center, Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles emphasizes a wide range of activities, including walkthroughs, workshops, screenings, performances, and special events, with an emphasis on sharing the resources of the gallery space for a broad range of family, youth and adult programs.

Currently on view: Education Lab LA. Learn more about this new initiative with inaugural artist Mark Bradford.

About Los Angeles

Hauser & Wirth opened its Los Angeles location in March 2016 in the heart of the burgeoning Downtown Los Angeles Arts District. Occupying a former flour mill, Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles is a vibrant communal space that links art and architecture with a dynamic events program. In addition to supporting and collaborating with many local and international cultural organizations, nonprofits, and universities, the Los Angeles gallery fosters public dialogue with the arts through a range of activities that engage the city’s diverse population.

Community

Hauser & Wirth aims to make a lasting contribution to the Los Angeles community by sharing its resources and offering a variety of family, youth, and adult programs inspired by the gallery’s visionary artists. Modeled after Hauser & Wirth’s Somerset gallery – the revolutionary arts center that opened in rural England in 2014 – the Los Angeles location has expanded its events program to include dance and music performances, film screenings, family activities, maker workshops, and artist-led conversations.

Learning

Hauser & Wirth has a long-term partnership with local educational institution Cal State LA to encourage diversity in filmmaking through support of the university’s Community Impact Media course. Alongside a financial contribution, the partnership encompasses opportunities for Cal State LA students to engage with the gallery and its program including through collaborative events hosted onsite at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles. The gallery also partners with CalArts on a residency exchange program and supports a number of local non-profits including My Friend’s Place, Piece by Piece, and The Midnight Mission.

Restorations and awards

Located at 901 East 3rd Street, the gallery is situated in the former Globe Mills complex, a collection of historic buildings dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The site was restored by Los Angeles real estate company Creative Space LA in consultation with Annabelle Selldorf, Principal of Selldorf Architects. In 2018, Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles was awarded the Chair’s Award, Los Angeles Conservancy’s highest honor recognizing the importance of preserving historic landmarks that make the city unique, and in 2021, Time Out L.A. named the gallery ‘Best Gallery in Los Angeles.’
