An Education Lab Coinciding with Jason Rhoades’ Exhibition ‘DRIVE’

14 May 2024

In celebration of Jason Rhoades’ exhibition in Los Angeles the Education Lab will host ‘Going Forward with No Brakes,’ an interactive space and series of programs throughout the duration of the exhibition for visitors to consider the significance of car culture in Los Angeles. For Rhoades, cars played an important role in the California artist’s work: as readymade sculptural objects, and as imaginative spaces in which to break, conceptualize, create and converse with others. In the Education Lab, visitors will have access to a curated film and books about cars and transportation and space to respond to the materials and document their own relationships to vehicles.

‘‘Going Forward with No Brakes’ is an excellent example of our learning activities. Speaking directly to our community, and in part developed with our local partners, it provides an interactive space that everyone can enjoy.’—Debbie Hillyerd, Senior Director, Learning

The Education Lab is part of Hauser & Wirth’s commitment to inclusive learning programs that instigate a dialogue between art, artists and diverse audiences. Located at our galleries in Menorca, Somerset and Downtown Los Angeles, as well as Chillida Leku museum, each Education Lab is a collaboration with a local community group, school or university. The interactive spaces take their starting point from one of our international artists, facilitating a platform for discovery, discussion and additional resources.

About Jason Rhoades. DRIVE
Since 27 February, Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles has dedicated an entire gallery at its Downtown LA location to a yearlong exploration of Rhoades’ art via the subject of cars and car culture. ‘Jason Rhoades. DRIVE’ will unfold over a series of thematic iterations, an ever-changing exhibition of Rhoades’ sculptures, drawings, videos and multiples—enriched by archival materials, public programs and contemporary perspectives.

About the artist
Jason Rhoades (1965 – 2006) was a visionary artist and world builder for whom sculpture and myth were intertwined forms of construction. His epic assemblage installations established him as a force of the international art world in the 1990s, while based in Los Angeles. America was his art’s imaginative subject, which he represented with a provocative sense of irony and materialism, along with disarming humor and authentic identification. For Rhoades, the car was a vehicle of artistic pursuit, both readymade sculpture and American idol.

The Education Lab at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles accompanies the exhibition ‘Jason Rhoades. DRIVE’ on view from 18 May 2024. Plan your visit here.
