Thrifty Thursdays Julian Temperley, Apples and Cider on the Somerset Levels

  • Thu 29 March 2018
  • 6.30 pm

Join us for a fascinating talk by Julian Temperley, the man behind the Somerset Cider Brandy Company and Burrow Hill Cider. Temperley’s farm sits among 180 acres of cider apple orchards at the base of Burrow Hill, and the farm has been pressing cider for over 200 years. In this talk, he will share anecdotes about the history of cider making in the UK, with a focus on the West Country, and it’s current outlook. Temperley will talk about the revival of the art of distilling in the West Country, tell the stories behind Burrow Hill Cider and the Somerset Cider Brandy Company, and update us on what he is doing at the farm. You will also have the opportunity to taste some of their cider, The Somerset Pomona, and the Somerset Cider Brandy 20-Year-Old. About Julian Temperley ‘Over the past three decades, Julian Temperley has done more than anyone else in Britain to develop classy drinks from homegrown apples’ – Financial Times Julian Temperley is the owner of the Somerset Cider Brandy Company & Burrow Hill Cider. He was granted a distilling license in 1989 and has led the revival in the art of distilling cider brandy in the UK. Temperley cares for every detail, from the way the apples are grown to the barrels that the cider brandy is fermented in, with a focus on quality and the taste of the apples used.
