For the second iteration of Camera Lucida, we bring you work by Viviane Sassen, a Dutch photographer living in Amsterdam whose work bridges fashion and fine art.

Hannibal, 2019. “The photograph is of a statue in the gardens of Versailles, covered for the winter. I never got to see the statue underneath, but something about the billowing fabric and the strings around the neck and under the bust made me think of the tragedy of Marie Antoinette’s beheading. I explored this and other stories of love, loss and decay when I was invited by the Palace of Versailles to make work for an exhibition at the Petit Palais. The result was my larger project Venus & Mercury.”—Sassen

Viviane Sassen was born in 1972 in Amsterdam and lives and works there. Her work has been the subject of numerous survey exhibitions, most recently “Phosphor: Art & Fashion”, which traveled internationally. She has received awards including the Prix de Rome (2007) and the ICP Infinity Award for Applied/Fashion/Advertising Photography (2011).
