The Cindy Sherman Legacy Project (CSLP) is a new initiative established to apply and systematize best available technologies to protect the condition of artist Cindy Sherman’s works in the photographic medium. The goal of the CSLP is to ensure that future generations can view the artist’s works in the condition she intended and to support appreciation for, scholarship on, and further understanding of her groundbreaking oeuvre.

In addition to providing condition assessments and reprinting services endorsed by the artist, the CSLP will launch the Cindy Sherman Catalogue Raisonné, which will be accessible online and free to all.

‘It is incredibly meaningful to develop and collaborate on a mechanism that will ensure that the integrity of my work will be protected in perpetuity. I hope by creating this project, we are providing a template for other artists working in the photographic medium.’

—Cindy Sherman

Existing and future collectors of Sherman’s work can submit their photographic print for condition assessment. Upon review, if eligible for reprinting, administrative fees will cover the submission, assessment, and reprinting process. The existing print will be shipped by its owner to a New York facility. Once reprinted, the damaged print will be destroyed and the owner will receive an artist-signed mint condition print as a replacement, subject to production and shipping costs.

‘The Legacy Project provides a framework for the legacy of artists working in the medium of photography, and will become an invaluable resource to further understanding of Cindy Sherman’s work.’

—Margaret Lee, Director, CSLP

The CSLP will also launch the ongoing Catalogue Raisonné for the benefit of scholars, curators, and collectors to advance learning about the artist’s work over the course of her career. Accessible online to all for free, contents of the catalogue raisonné will be released over the coming years and updated as new information becomes available.
