Hauser & Wirth Publishers is participating in noisé magazine’s first reading room in Shanghai, created as a place where reading can happen again.
In an age where attention is diluted by screens and the volume of content exceeds its lasting meaning, reading itself is becoming rare. Extending noisé’s curatorial approach to content, the space brings into focus the artists, thinkers and writers who have continuously inspired noisé over the past five years. It presents a selection of publications across art, literature, theory and photography, spanning different regions and languages, and opens them to the public for reading.
The first chapter takes inspiration from a phrase from when noisé portrayed the legendary gallerist Marian Goodman, who was once described as: ‘une main de fer dans un gant de velours (an iron hand in a velvet glove)’, bringing together works by nearly 100 women artists, writers and thinkers, spanning both canonical and experimental practices.

Some of the publications are out of print or not readily accessible / difficult to access, making this open reading system a particularly valuable experience. Hauser & Wirth Publishers has contributed a selection of publications to this first chapter of the noisé reading room, including publications on gallery artists Lee Lozano, Maria Lassnig, Cindy Sherman, Susan Rothenberg, Eva Hesse and Roni Horn.
All six issues of noisé are presented alongside the collection. Photography, music and continuously evolving inspiration boards contributed by artists form a living archive within the space, offering ways to see and sense how artists read the world.
