About Frank Bowling
Sir Frank Bowling OBE RA is regarded as one of Britain’s most significant living artists. For over six decades, Bowling has rigorously pursued a practice which boldly expands the possibilities and properties of paint. At the age of 92, Bowling continues to paint every day in his South London studio.
Frank Bowling’s work is represented in around 60 collections worldwide and has been exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including the 2017 – 2019 touring exhibition ‘Mappa Mundi,’ the hugely successful retrospective at Tate Britain in 2019 and the major exhibition ‘Frank Bowling: Americas,’ which toured from MFA Boston to SFMOMA from 2022 – 2023. Bowling’s ‘Map Paintings’ were the centerpiece of the exhibition ‘Faultlines: Contemporary African Art and Shifting Landscapes’ at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003. He was elected a Royal Academician in 2005, appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008 and knighted in 2020 for his services to art. In 2022, Bowling was awarded the Wolfgang Hahn Prize which honors exceptional contemporary artists.
About Ben Bowling
Ben Bowling is Emeritus Professor of Criminology at King’s College London, co-director of Frank Bowling Studio and Chair of Trustees of the Frank Bowling Foundation. His books including Young People and Crime (1995), Violent Racism (1999), Policing the Caribbean (2010), and The Politics of the Police (2020). As co-director (with his brother, Sacha Bowling) of Frank Bowling studio, he leads the studio team and works with galleries and museums freeing Sir Frank to make the critically acclaimed work that is at the heart of his painting practice. Bowling is also a musician and his band—Doc Bowling and his Blues Professors—performs regularly across the UK and Europe.
