On the occasion of the exhibition ‘Louise Bourgeois. Gathering Wool,’ at Hauser & Wirth 22nd Street, please join us in our amphitheater at Hauser & Wirth 18th Street, for a screening of ‘The Art Whisperer,’ a documentary by Flemming Fynsk.

The Art Whisperer is an intimate portrait of the late Ginny Williams (1927-2019), a remarkable woman who quietly but profoundly changed the art world. Beginning her journey at the age of 60, she became one of the great champions of women artists, recognizing and elevating voices that had long been overlooked. Through her vision, conviction, and support, she helped legitimize and bring lasting recognition to artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Yayoi Kusama, Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Agnes Martin, Ann Hamilton, Roni Horn, Joan Mitchell, and Ruth Bernhard. She served on the boards of major U.S. museums, including the Guggenheim, where she tirelessly advocated for female artists. Her influence continues to resonate in today’s art market and museum collections, yet her contribution remains largely unknown outside the art world.

About ‘Louise Bourgeois. Gathering Wool’
Over the course of her seven-decade career, Louise Bourgeois never privileged figuration over abstraction, any more than she favored one material over another, and yet her relationship to abstraction has been less well defined and understood, less easily situated within the main currents of postwar art.

‘Gathering Wool,’ explores the artist’s complex relationship to abstraction through a series of late sculptures, reliefs and works on paper, many of which have never been exhibited before. These will be installed alongside a selection of earlier works to illuminate the consistency of Bourgeois’s themes and her development of a symbolic abstract language.
