Discussion: Monika Sosnowska and Brutalist Architecture

Join Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles in collaboration with Southern California Institue of Architecture for a discussion between architects Marcelyn Gow & Florencia Pita on the work of Monika Sosnowska. Drawing from their unique backgrounds and on the occasion of the artist’s first show in Los Angeles – ‘Monika Sosnowska’ – Marcelyn and Florencia will investigate Sosnowska’s manipulation of Brutalist architecture to explore how the estranged architectural object conjures multiple contexts, spaces and histories. About Marcelyn Gow – SCI-Arc Undergraduate Thesis Coordinator, Design Studio & History Theory Faculty Marcelyn Gow is principal of servo los angeles, a design collaborative invested in the development of architectural environments integrating synthetic ecologies with shifting material states. servo’s work has been exhibited at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, Venice Architecture Biennale, Centre Pompidou, Archilab, Artists Space, the SCI-Arc Gallery, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, the Storefront for Art and Architecture and SFMoMA. Gow received her Architecture degrees from the Architectural Association and Columbia University, as well as a Dr.Sc. from the ETH Zurich. Her doctoral dissertation Invisible Environment: Art, Architecture and a Systems Aesthetic explores the relationship between aesthetic research and technological innovation. Gow has lectured internationally and contributed to numerous journals including Perspecta, Via and AD. She is the coeditor of Material Beyond Materials and Onramp 4&5. Gow was the recipient of a 2012 Graham Foundation Grant to Individuals and a 2014-15 City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs Visual Artist Fellowship. She currently teaches design studios and critical theory seminars at SCI-Arc. About Florencia Pita – SCI-Arc Graduate Thesis Coordinator, Design Studio & Visual Studies Faculty Florencia Pita is a partner and founder of Pita & Bloom, a design and research collaborative based in Los Angeles. She is also principal of FPmod. Pita graduated in 1998 from the National University of Rosario in Argentina, with a licensure degree. In 1999 she was awarded the 2000 Fulbright-Fondo Nacional de las Artes Scholarship to pursue studies at Columbia University, and in 2001 she received her Master’s Degree from the MSAAD Program at Columbia University. Pita’s work experience includes the offices of Greg Lynn FORM in Los Angeles, Eisenman Architects in New York City and Asymptote in New York City. Her independent projects have been part of several museum collections, such as MoMA, MAKVienna, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and have been recognized through publications and awards. She currently teaches Design Studios and Visual Studies courses at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and was recently appointed Graduate Thesis Coordinator. Pita & Bloom’s work is currently on view in the exhibition The Architectural Imagination at the A+D Museum in Los Angeles.
