Getting to Know: Angel Otero

On the occasion of his first exhibition ‘That First Rain in May’ at our West Hollywood gallery, artist Angel Otero met with students from Inner-City Arts to discuss his newest composition of work. Through a labor-intensive process of oil painting on plexiglass, then scraping the applied medium into ‘skins’ which he subsequently collages with wet paint onto canvas, Otero has developed a signature mode of expressive storytelling. The artist’s unique approach allows for an active exchange with the medium, inviting chance and unpredictability into his practice.

International Curatorial Residency 2018

Hauser & Wirth Somerset’s second International Curatorial Residency brought together five influential curators from around the world to spend five days immersed in its ethos and programming of the gallery. During the residency, the curators – each bringing their own personal experiences and knowledge – engage with artists, gallery staff and members of the local community, inspiring their creative discourse.

Our annual International Curatorial Residency brings together five influential curators from around the world to spend five days immersed in the ethos and programming of Hauser & Wirth Somerset, to share knowledge and to create new opportunities and connections for the cultural sector. The 2017 theme was ‘Adventurous Curators and International Perspectives.’

International Curatorial Residency Symposium 2018: Exploring the Third Dimension

‘Exploring the Third Dimension’ was a one-day symposium that examined curatorial practice in relation to sculpture through the experiences of international curators working at the top of their field. The day explored different models of display, with reference to cultural activism, education, and engagement with three-dimensional artworks, and invited questions such as how might we think differently about sculpture as an art historical category in its own right.

‘Curating Private Art Collections’ was a one-day symposium that invited five curators overseeing international private collections to Hauser & Wirth Somerset on occasion of the exhibition ‘Unconscious Landscape. Works from the Ursula Hauser Collection’.
