In Conversation: Mark Godfrey and Zoé Whitley on Ed Clark

On the occasion of the exhibition ‘Ed Clark. Without a Doubt,’ we joined Mark Godfrey and Zoé Whitley in conversation, to discuss the artist’s first-ever solo exhibition in the UK.

About Mark Godfrey
Dr. Mark Godfrey is a curator and art historian based in London. Between 2007 and 2021, he was Senior Curator at Tate Modern, where he worked on several major exhibitions, including retrospectives of Roni Horn, Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Alighiero Boetti, and Franz West. Outside Tate, he curated shows by Christopher Williams, R.H. Quaytman, and David Hammons.

He won the Absolut Prize for art writing and was a jury member for the Venice Biennale in 2017. He was also the co-curator with Zoé Whitley of the acclaimed exhibition ‘Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power.’ The ‘Soul of a Nation Reader’ is published next month by Gregory R. Miller & Co. Godfrey is currently working on projects with Anicka Yi, Laura Owens, and Jacqueline Humphries.

About Dr. Zoé Whitley
Dr. Zoé Whitley has been, since March 2020, director of Chisenhale Gallery in London’s East End. A leading non-profit space founded by artists, Chisenhale produces and commissions new works of art with emerging British and international artists. In 2020, Zoé curated Frieze London’s special-themed section, Possessions, exploring spirituality and contemporary art, and co-curated Elijah Pierce’s America at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia.

Previous exhibitions to her credit include Cathy Wilkes’ British Pavilion presentation at the Venice Biennale in 2019 and co-curating the award-winning Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power. She writes widely on contemporary artists and 20th-century designers, including a children’s book on Frank Bowling and a forthcoming title in the same series on Sophie Taeuber-Arp.

She serves on the UK's 2020-21 Arts Council Collection committee. Zoé serves on the boards of Creative Access, the only organization in the UK dedicated to recruiting under-represented talent in the creative industries, and Decolonising Arts Institute, University of the Arts London. Her prior roles include Senior Curator (Hayward Gallery), Curator, International Art (Tate Modern), and Curator of Contemporary Programmes (V&A).
