Hauser & Wirth recognises the value that residencies can provide to an artist’s individual development and their impact within a community. Our diverse gallery locations represent the breadth of artistic communities and support a system for artists from around the world. We focus on the creation of an environment that facilitates an artist devoting dedicated time to evolve their practice with the added benefits of studio spaces, new influences, contacts and visibility.

Our residencies are the outcome of Iwan & Manuela Wirth and Marc Payot’s approach to fostering opportunities for artists, something they have always done but that has been made more visible by Hauser & Wirth Somerset. Since 2013, Hauser & Wirth Somerset has supported an immersive artist-in-residence program, providing artists with an extended period in Bruton, UK to draw inspiration from Durslade Farm, the local culture and the surrounding landscape. The location specific-residency has no prescribed outcome but instead provides artists with time and space for reflection, research and production. Previous artists-in-residence include: Stefan Brüggemann; Martin Creed; Rashid Johnson; Allison Katz; Bharti Kher; Thomas J Price; Christina Quarles; Pipilotti Rist; Mika Rottenberg; and Henry Taylor.

Hauser & Wirth Somerset invites artists to spend an extended period of time in Bruton, UK, based at the Maltings Studio space in the center of the town. The Maltings, a historic building located at the end of Bruton High Street, has been converted into artist studios, keeping much of its original features and character intact. Artists-in-residence contribute to a continuous creative hub, producing artworks, projects, community events and learning workshops. Residencies are by invitation only.

International Curatorial Residency

Our annual International Curatorial Residency brings together influential curators from around the world where they spend a period of time immersed in the ethos and programming of Hauser & Wirth Somerset. During the residency, the curators—each bringing their own personal experiences, knowledge and expertise—engage with our artists, the gallery team and members of the local community—to inspire their creative discourse. The residency is an opportunity to share knowledge and to create new connections for the cultural sector.
