Throughout the month of October, Hauser & Wirth celebrated The Big Draw Festival 2023 theme ‘Drawing with Senses’ across our global locations. The gallery welcomed its audiences to foster meaningful connections with art and artists, encouraging deep listening and creative expression.
Participants were invited to bring attention to their thoughts, feelings and sensations in each gallery location as they intimately contemplated the artworks on display and record their personal responses through sound and voice. By audio recording their responses to this sensory experience, participants were able to experiment with translating sound into forms of drawing. An archived selection of these responses are available to explore here.
The following locations took part in The Big Draw Festival 2023 with a mixture of school, and community workshops:
Chillida Leku
Exploring the museum’s sculptures with all five senses: touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell, participants translate sensations, emotions and experiences into creative works by creating your sound recordings and drawings.
Downtown Los Angeles
A participatory exhibition tour of ‘Harmony Korine. AGGRESSIVE DR1FTER,’ allowed participants to ‘slow look’, which is the act of giving yourself time to create deeper connections with artworks. As part of the ‘slow look’ activity, participants were encouraged to record audio reflections of sensory experiences, memories and reactions.
London
In response to the exhibition ’Avery Singer. Free Fall,’ participants were asked to think about how their senses conjured up memories and related emotions. This interactive workshop transformed this ’remembering’ into something physical, with participants leaving personalised recordings, drawings and creative writing in our Education Lab.
Menorca
Inspired by the outdoor works, visitors will experiment and transpose their sensory experiences into sound recordings and drawings.
Somerset
Inspired by the multidisciplinary Kunsthalle form of ‘GRUPPENAUSSTELLUNG’, participants explored the variety of artworks in the exhibition, whilst listening closely to their senses and surroundings, translating these sounds into color, shape and form through drawing.
