We are delighted to continue our partnership with Drawing Matter for the ninth iteration of Architecture Summer School. Taking place Wednesday 27 August – Saturday 30 August 2025, this unique program has been widely praised by students as providing an unrivalled insight into architecture and the associated professions.
Set up by Drawing Matter in 2017, the annual summer school offers fully-funded places for students from all backgrounds to get a taste of architecture, both as an academic subject and as a future career. It is designed to give students with an interest in architecture and the built environment an insight into how professional architects record what they see, how this information connects to the buildings they produce, and how the process of drawing can be used to test and develop an idea. It introduces students to the discipline through a wide range of activities including: individual and collective drawing exercises; group discussions; practical experimentation; and other forms of collaborative learning. During the course, students are exposed to many of the leading thinkers in architectural education today.
Initiated by Robert Bargery of the Royal Fine Art Commission Trust and Niall Hobhouse of Drawing Matter, the course was developed in collaboration with Professor Andrew Clancy from Kingston University and Debbie Hillyerd, Partner and Senior Director of Learning at Hauser & Wirth.
During the four-day course, students take part in activities such as drawing and making exercises, learning how to develop design skills, formulating critical social thinking and observing the city like an architect. By the end of the course, students will have created a network of contacts with other participants, tutors and architects.

This year, the school will be based at the Zaha Hadid Foundation in Clerkenwell, London, alongside workshops at the Drawing Matter archive space in Covent Garden and Hauser & Wirth London. Our gallery on Savile Row will host the students on Thursday 28 August 2025. Tuition will be led by the teams at Drawing Matter and the Zaha Hadid Foundation, alongside a team of young architecture tutors. This includes: Andrew Clancy, Professor of Architecture at Kingston University; Ben Machin, Lecturer at Loughborough University; Sakiko Kohashi, Lecturer at Central Saint Martins; and Wilson Yau, Learning Officer at Zaha Hadid Foundation.
Through our ongoing partnership with Drawing Matter and Hauser & Wirth Somerset’s proximity to to Shatwell Farm, we have supported the Architecture Summer School for many years. We previously hosted the course, student presentations and community celebrations in the Radić Pavilion in Oudolf Field in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. In October 2024, Drawing Matter relocated its activities and collection from Shatwell Farm in Somerset to Smart’s Place in London. We are delighted to continue supporting the program this summer through our gallery in London.

‘The tutors were super helpful in advising about university applications and interviews, even which schools to look at, which was great as before the course I felt quite stressed about applications as I had no opportunity to speak to someone who knew about those things.’—Former Architecture Summer School Student
About Drawing Matter
Drawing Matter explores the role of drawing in architectural thought and practice, through publications, exhibitions, and workshops for students and practitioners. Central to our activities is the Drawing Matter Collection of many thousands of architectural and design drawings from across the world, dating from the Renaissance to the present day. Drawing Matter supports architectural education through workshops, seminars, publications and short courses—the Architecture Summer School being a primary example. Alongside Hauser & Wirth, the summer school is supported by partners Kingston University, Zaha Hadid Foundation, and many architecture practices in the UK and abroad to ensure the summer school remains free for students.
