On Friday 14 November 2025, Hauser & Wirth’s 18th Street gallery was activated by Learning Exchange: Artists Matter, the latest edition of the gallery’s annual convening dedicated to cross-disciplinary dialogue.
Part of Hauser & Wirth’s ongoing Learning program, the series brings together voices from across the art ecosystem, fostering exchanges between artists and arts professionals, and emphasizing the value of direct, first-hand engagement with art.
Artist Catherine Goodman opened Learning Exchange: Artists Matter with a walkthrough of her exhibition ‘Island,’ in conversation with Anders Bergstrom, Director at Hauser & Wirth. The monotypes on view—created during her residency at Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) on Long Island—represent Goodman’s first major engagement with printmaking and signal a significant expansion of her artistic vocabulary. An educator as much as an artist, Goodman approached the presentation through a dual lens, offering insights into the works and reflecting on the generative possibilities of drawing and printmaking as spaces for learning, experimentation and collaboration.
Artist Richard Jackson and Randy Kennedy, Director of Special Projects and Editor-in-Chief of Ursula magazine, continued the program with a special conversation that delved into the intersections of creative practice, community and learning. Jackson reflected on his relationship with his former student and graduate assistant Jason Rhoades, the city of Los Angeles, and his involvement with the Mountain School.
The day’s activities culminated in a celebration at the Roth Bar. First conceived by Dieter Roth in the early 1980s, ‘the bar’ is a dynamic and changing installation and is a continuing element in the Roths’ cross-generational practice. Both bar and studio were central concepts and locales for the work of Dieter Roth. Since its first iteration, the bar has gradually evolved, and with each exhibition new site-specific materials have been incorporated into the installation.
Launched in New York in 2023 with artist Angel Otero as guest speaker, the Learning Exchange has since evolved into a recurring platform for dialogue across institutions and disciplines. In 2024, the program returned with a roundtable program featuring leaders from the Studio Museum in Harlem, Queens Museum, The Drawing Center, Brooklyn Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art. That same year, the series extended to Somerset for a conversation with artist Allison Katz and curator Frances Morris. Its next iteration will take place in Los Angeles in 2026.
