Artists Frank Bowling, Firelei Báez and Isa Genzken are participating in the 36th Bienal de São Paulo at the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion through 11 January 2026.
Titled ‘Not All Travellers Walk Roads – Of Humanity as Practice,’ the biennial is inspired by the poem 'Da calma e do silêncio' [Of Calm and Silence] by poet Conceição Evaristo. The exhibition is conceptualized by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung with co-curators Alya Sebti, Anna Roberta Goetz and Thiago de Paula Souza, together with Keyna Eleison as co-curator at large and Henriette Gallus as strategy and communications advisor.
The curatorial team was guided by patterns of bird migration as a metaphor for artistic practice across borders. Species such as the Arctic tern, red-tailed hawk and ruff—moving across continents, climates and waters—provided a model for understanding displacement, survival and transformation.

‘By studying birds’ navigation skills, their impulse to migrate across land and water, their survival instincts and their expanded sense of space and time,’ explains Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung explains, ‘We were able to engage with artistic practices in different geographic regions while reflecting on the meaning of bringing humanity together in the context of the 36th Bienal de São Paulo.’
A central figure of this year’s Bienal is Sir Frank Bowling, represented by 25 paintings spanning his entire career. Installed across every floor of the Bienal building, his work becomes a recurring motif of the exhibition. This milestone marks Bowling’s most significant recognition in South America to date—the region of his birth.
