A group of young female and gender-inclusive youth explore Hurtado’s life and creative practice through her artist statement, composed in the late 1970’s.
On the occasion of ‘Luchita Hurtado. Yo Soy,’ and as part of the gallery’s ongoing learning initiatives, the Hurtado estate collaborated with young creatives from Las Fotos Project.
The group spent a day at the estate exploring Hurtado’s life and creative practice, which engaged feminism, abstraction and environmentalism. They witnessed firsthand how language and craft informed her artwork, while also learning about key moments from her career, including her first solo exhibition at The Woman’s Building in Los Angeles in 1974.
To mark the opening of Hurtado’s first solo exhibition at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles, the participants read her artist statement inside the estate’s headquarters in both English and Spanish, while offering personal reflections on her legacy. The resulting film, Yo Soy Pintora, on view in the upper mezzanine of the exhibition, serves as both an educational tool and a tribute linking Hurtado’s bold vision with the voices of a new generation.
Two alumni from California State University Los Angeles’ Community Impact Media program joined the project as videographers, working closely with our Learning team. Their involvement brought technical expertise and expanded professional opportunities for emerging media makers committed to community storytelling.
