‘Mark Bradford: Process Collettivo’ in Venice

4 April 2024

A book launch and new fundraising limited edition celebrating the culmination of the eight-year partnership between Mark Bradford and Venice non-profit Rio Terà dei Pensieri

This April in Venice, to celebrate the culmination of the eight-year partnership between Mark Bradford and non-profit Rio Terà dei Pensieri, Hauser & Wirth Publishers will launch a new book and fundraising limited edition work by the renowned American artist at a bookstore in the city. Proceeds from sales will support Rio Terà, the cooperative that creates work opportunities with and for people currently and recently incarcerated in two prisons in Venice, Italy. Named Process Collettivo, this ongoing project has built upon Rio Terà’s existing activities and raised further awareness of and support for the organization’s work.

‘Mark Bradford: Process Collettivo’ is available now from Hauser & Wirth Publishers

The new publication ‘Mark Bradford: Process Collettivo,’ edited and with an introduction by Nicole R. Fleetwood, features a conversation between the artist and Liri Longo, former president of Rio Terà, that delves into the history of their work together and the importance of relationships in collectives, non-profit work and socially-engaged artmaking. Functioning in the spirit of Process Collettivo, the book serves as a platform for vital information related to the project’s concerns: new essays by Asale Angel-Ajani, Elisabetta Grande, Mitchell S. Jackson and Jessica Lynne critically assess the state of Italian prisons, provide a comparison of Italian and American carceral systems, reflect on the power of creativity inside prisons and consider Process Collettivo as part of a larger discourse on social practice.

In conjunction with the opening weeks of this year’s edition of the Venice Biennale, Hauser & Wirth Publishers will welcome visitors at a bookstore in centrally located Campo San Maurizio. The bookstore will feature the new book, ‘Mark Bradford: Process Collettivo,’ as well as a selection of recent Hauser & Wirth Publishers’ titles, and additional publications on subjects related to prison reform and social practices. Proceeds of book sales will be donated to support Rio Terà dei Pensieri.

A new limited-edition work by Mark Bradford
In celebration of Process Collettivo, Mark Bradford has created a new edition to raise funds in support of both Rio Terà and the project. Made in collaboration with Berengo Studio in Murano—an island off Venice known as one of the world’s leading centers of glassmaking—the edition consists of 30 glass sculptures of tote bags, a reference to both the PVC tote bags made in the workshops at the men’s prison and the branded totes ubiquitous at international art events such as the Venice Biennale. Bradford’s edition features an etching of tallies on its surface, symbolizing the temporality of incarceration.
