Anj Smith for Fornasetti

British painter Anj Smith’s recent collaboration with Italian design atelier Fornasetti includes a Trumeau cabinet, porcelain vases and these ceramic wall plates. Working closely with Barnaba Fornasetti the artist created three new plate designs, taking the iconic Fornasetti ‘Tema e Variazione’ series as a departure point. This series features evolving imagery based on the face of Italian Soprano and muse of the Belle Epoch, Lena Cavalieri. Here Smith subverts the traditional idea of the ‘muse’, restoring an unapologetic agency to her three depictions of Cavalieri.
