Berlinde De Bruyckere: In the Woods there were Chainsaws

“For this book, I did not choose the texts, they came by chance, closely interwoven with my work. In this book I bring together sculptures of the past two years, wherein tree, man, metamorphoses are the subject. While selecting the images, or rather arranging them, I discovered the ‘great diversity’ with which each sculpture portrays this subject matter. … My sculptures generate themselves, they each portray their hunger for existence and the toil of their coming into being. But eventually they stand alone, revealing their existential solitude.”
