Hauser & Wirth Publishers, Utopia/Dystopia: Utopian Languages, Hauser & Wirth New York 22nd Street, Wednesday 31 January 2018, 7 pm

The second half of Hauser & Wirth Publishers’ Utopia/Dystopia series, co-presented with Morbid Anatomy, will open with an event exploring the ways in which language has been harnessed to utopian projects. Linguist Arika Okrent will present some of the highs and lows in humanity’s 900-year quest to build a better language. Then, J. R. R. Tolkien scholar Jessica Burke will look at the languages of Middle-earth, the cultures that speak them, the related functions of language and mythology, and their place within our world today.
