Alexander Calder. From the Stony River to the Sky Book Lab

About

This Book & Printed Matter Lab is devoted to Alexander Calder. The theme of Calder’s Roxbury studio in particular becomes the focus, directing a selected representation of how the artist moved between a variety of media and visual languages. Among the materials on view are the historic film Works of Calder, 1950, directed by Herbert Matter; archival correspondence between Calder and Matter; a reproduction of Calder’s My Shop, 1955, with accompanying details; documentary photographs taken by Matter of the artist and his works; Quotations from the artist’s 1966 autobiography, reflecting his memories of Roxbury; and a poem written by André Masson about his own experience in the studio.

August 22nd is the birthday of Alexander Calder, one of the best- known and most prolific artists of the 20th century. His work hangs in museums all over the world, but for over 40 years, he lived and worked in Roxbury, a small town in Connecticut’s Litchfield County.

With thanks to the Calder Foundation, New York.
