Panel Discussion: Dr Jo Applin with Simone Rocha, Lisa Panting and Luis Laplace

The legacy that Ursula Hauser has created as a collector and woman in the arts is the starting point for a discussion which celebrates creativity in its diverse forms. The panellists are designer Simone Rocha, architect Luis Laplace and gallerist Lisa Panting. The discussion is chaired by Dr. Jo Applin. About the speakers: Dr Jo Applin is a lecturer specialised in modern and contemporary art at The Courtauld Institute of Art. Her research addresses questions of materiality, abstraction, sexuality, subjectivity and feminism. Her most recent book, Lee Lozano: Not Working, was awarded the Suzanne and James Mellor Book Prize from the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C The projects undertaken by Luis Laplace for Hauser & Wirth include the architectural development of the galleries in Somerset, the interiors of Le Vieux Chalet in Gstaad, the gallery in St Moritz and more recently, the extensive renovation of the Museo Chillida-Leku near San Sebastián, Spain, dedicated to the artist Eduardo Chillida. Born and educated in Buenos Aires, Laplace graduated from the Universidad de Belgrano with a Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Architecture & Urbanism in 1995. After working in Argentina, Laplace moved to New York where, from 1999 to 2004, he worked for Selldorf Architects, an practice well-known for its devotion to modern design and expertise in art-related projects. In 2004 Luis Laplace founded his own firm, Laplace, with his partner Christophe Comoy. Lisa Panting co-founded Hollybush Gardens, a gallery based in Clerkenwell, London, in 2005 with Malin Ståhl. Since it’s opening the gallery has championed artists who share an uncompromising commitment to their practice. These include Lubaina Himid, Charlotte Prodger, Andrea Büttner, Claudette Johnson and Reto Pulfer. The gallery operates a full exhibition programme of monographic and group shows and also presents at major art fairs such as Art Basel and Frieze. Prior to the gallery Lisa was a senior lecturer at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design and a curator at Book Works, London. Simone Rocha was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1986. In 2008 she graduated with a BA in Fashion from The National College of Art and Design in Dublin continuing in 2010 to graduate from the acclaimed Fashion MA at Central Saint Martin’s College, London. Simone debuted at London Fashion Week in September 2010. Her collections have gained her some of the most prestigious stockists in the world. Simone Rocha has evolved into an internationally renowned and award-winning brand. In the past, accolades have included British Fashion Awards for ‘Emerging Talent, Ready-to-Wear’ (2013) and ‘The New Establishment Award’ (2014). Most recently at the 2016 Fashion Awards Simone received the “British Womenswear Designer Award” as well as the 2016 Harper’s Bazaar Designer of Year Award. Simone Rocha and Hauser & Wirth have collaborated on jewellery inspired by the works of the French-American artist, Louise Bourgeois whose work features in 'Unconscious Landscape.
