Gallery Assistant (Fixed-Term)

We are looking for a multi-talented person to join the Somerset Front Desk team and provide day-to-day support for our gallery activities. Reporting to the Gallery Manager, this position requires an energetic and outgoing personality with a focus on making guests, artists and visitors feel welcomed, cared for and valued. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast paced, public facing environment, adapting quickly to new and evolving roles and responsibilities. They will possess excellent communication skills, strong adaptability, proven customer service skills, collaboration, diplomacy, and excellent attention to detail.

Working as part of this team will include, but not be limited to the following responsibilities:

  • Participate and assist with the day-to-day activity of the Front Desk

  • Greeting all guests warmly and ensuring that guests feel welcomed in the gallery spaces

  • Anticipating and adapting to the ever-shifting visitor needs as well as building a strong rapport with guests

  • Attend to special guests (e.g. VIPs) and answer their enquiries

  • Supporting a team of 10 + invigilators

  • Responding quickly and sympathetically to visitor, client, and colleague enquiries; providing a high level of hospitality and visitor experience as well as ensuring all information is relevant, accurate and helpful

  • Ensuring all public and client-facing spaces are always presented to the highest standards.

    Maintaining gallery properties, offices and all guest facing areas in accordance with procedures

  • Supporting the wider gallery teams with delivering of internal and external gallery events

  • Knowledgeable about the gallery and hospitality offerings, including our global locations

  • Offer assistance with administrative tasks (e.g. confirming travel arrangements, taking messages)

  • Handling incoming and outgoing mail, email, booking couriers, and monitoring shipments

  • Recording data and collecting qualitative feedback, including compiling statistics and reports

  • Assisting Front Desk colleagues with administrative and project support

  • Ensure excellent customer service standards by actively engaging customers with Hauser & Wirth retail products, publications, and the ethos of our organisation

Required knowledge, skills and experience:

  • 1-2 years' experience in a front of house role

  • Approachable and adaptable to changing demands and deadlines while also maintaining professionalism

  • Ability to multi-task with shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Exceptional customer service skills

  • Ability to work in high-energy, high expectation and team oriented global culture

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Progressive learner, with strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Ability and confidence to take initiative

  • Understanding of art and art galleries is desirable but not essential, but an interest in art is key

  • Able to build rapport, trust and excellent working relationships with all colleagues in a multicultural, multinational work environment

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Apple Mac systems

  • Organised, detail-oriented and resourceful with excellent time management skills

  • Ability to drive for this role is essential

  • First Aid and Fire Warden qualified desirable but not essential

Core position hours are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday – 9 am to 6 pm, located at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. Candidate should be available to work additional hours up to 40 hours per week to support with events and other business activity.
