  • Sales Director
    Hauser & Wirth Somerset

    For our gallery in Somerset, Hauser & Wirth is looking to recruit a dynamic and experienced person to join our team as a Sales Director.

    Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

    • Proactive input related to sales offers at Hauser & Wirth Somerset, art fairs and internal and external exhibitions.
    • Observation of the primary and secondary markets.
    • Participation and representation of the gallery at art fairs and relevant external exhibitions.
    • Actively engage in selling artworks for all HW artists as well as for secondary market activities.
    • Focus on client relations management in order to help develop and implement the gallery’s sales strategy.
    • Collaborate with all sales staff in all locations.
    • Work closely with exhibiting artists to assist with the development of their exhibitions within institutions and museums.
    • Suggest sales prices for artworks of exhibiting artists
    • Responsible for sales terms and conditions, consignment agreements, and for relating them to Sales Team, responsible Project Coordinator and Registrar
    • Securing work from Artist studios
    • Contact with other galleries
    • To represent Hauser & Wirth Somerset at all times

    Required knowledge, skills and qualifications:

    • Bachelors or advance degree preferred
    • At least 5 years relevant sales experience in commercial galleries or auction houses
    • Ability to build strategic partnerships within a regional and international level, towards client development
    • Strong professional ethics, discretion and confidentiality, and sound judgement
    • Team-player with ability to function exceptionally in a fast paced work environment; ability to multi-task while prioritizing important issues
    • High level organization skills and attention to detail
    • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
    • The Sales Director will be required to work weekends and evenings
    • A driving license is desirable

  • Retail Manager
    Hauser & Wirth Somerset

    Hauser & Wirth Somerset is a pioneering world-class gallery and multi-purpose arts centre, which acts as a destination for experiencing art, architecture and the remarkable Somerset landscape through new and innovative exhibitions of contemporary art.

    This spring we are opening two new exciting retail spaces; a Durslade Estate Shop and a Bookshop on Bruton High Street. As part of our new development, we are looking for an enthusiastic and unique individual, who shares a genuine passion for Hauser & Wirth’s values and who can create excitement around products and initiatives in a retail environment.

    The Retail Manager will be integral to the establishment of our new shop spaces and their ongoing management. They will reflect Hauser & Wirth’s ethos, its changing exhibitions and events programmes, and the needs of our diverse audience, through creating a unique retail initiative.

    A creative individual with a passion for retail, the Retail Manager will have responsibility for product selection and development (in cooperation with the Directors), product merchandising, setting, achieving and exceeding financial targets, stock management, developing and implementing effective retail management systems and processes, and developing a customer base at Hauser & Wirth Somerset.

    Main tasks include but are not limited to:

    Shop Responsibilities:

    • Managing and supervising retail spaces, ensuring they are presented to the highest standards at all times.
    • Maintain a strong presence in the shops, leading by example to ensure that customers receive the highest standards of service and sales expertise at all times.
    • Responsible for opening and closing the Bruton based bookshop each day.
    • Dealing with visitor enquiries and complaints by telephone, email and in person and providing relevant, correct and helpful information.
    • Identifying current and future customer requirements by establishing rapport with potential and actual customers to understand service requirements.
    • Developing a sales and promotional programme that maximises sales opportunities with exhibitions, gallery and local activities and seasonality.
    • Updating and changing displays on a regular basis to ensure a creative and inspiring layout and to enhance the appearance of the shop.
    • Ensuring stock is appropriately merchandised in accordance with established guidelines.
    • Manage supplier relationships effectively to ensure high service levels and optimum terms and conditions.
    • Handling all incoming and outgoing mail and couriers, and logging all deliveries.
    • Ensuring the safety of visitors through the implementation of agreed health and safety and security procedures.

    Administrative Responsibilities:

    • Manage product selection, development and acquisition to ensure an imaginative and unique range of products, which reflect the gallery’s ethos, programmes and audience.
    • Monitor revenue performance, interpret trends and maximise commercial opportunities in order to achieve sales targets.
    • Analyse prices to ensure competitive and profitable pricing on goods. Determine mark-up on goods, offers and promotions on slow moving merchandise, and establish procedures and terms for consignment items (local arts and crafts).
    • Develop and implement effective measures and systems for stock control and to ensure sufficient levels of stock at minimum stock holding.
    • Liaise with Accounts department to ensure effective systems for cash handling, receipts, end of day reporting and retail banking are in place; reviewing and updating procedures as necessary.
    • Responsible for the recruitment, induction, training and development, appraisals and performance reviews of part-time retail staff.
    • Achieve financial objectives by preparing annual budget: scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
    • Maintaining awareness of market trends, understanding forthcoming customer initiatives and monitoring what local businesses are doing.
    • Updating colleagues on business performance, new initiatives and other pertinent issues.
    • Initiating changes to improve the business
    • Liaising with Press & Media Manager to plan and implement shop advertising, events, promotions and product development.
    • Recording visitor statistics as requested, assist with audience surveys and ensure the customer database is kept up to date.

    The successful candidate will have:

    • A minimum of 2 years experience as a retail manager or in a supervisory level and a good commercial acumen.
    • Strong interpersonal and team working skills.
    • Excellent customer service and rapport building skills.
    • Excellent people management and hands-on leadership skills.
    • High energy and a demonstrable passion for art, architecture, gardens, landscape, farming, food and culture – or some, if not a combination, of these things.
    • Excellent administration and IT skills: experience of POS management systems and procedures including stock control, purchase ordering and reporting.
    • Excellent organisation skills with the ability to implement profitable operational systems.
    • Strong financial management and numeracy skills ranging from interpretation of data to management of accounts and budgeting.
    • A clear eye for visual merchandising and presentation with excellent attention to detail.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. They will be highly personable with a pro-active, resourceful and flexible approach to the job.
    • Driving license is requested.

    Hauser & Wirth zählt zu den weltweit führenden Galerien für zeitgenössische Kunst und verfügt über Standorte in Zürich, London, Somerset, New York und bald auch Los Angeles.

    Für unsere Galerie in Zürich suchen wir Praktikanten/Innen für die Zeiträume Juli – Dezember 2015 und Januar – Juni 2016. Dauer des Praktikums 6 Monate.

    Während dieses Zeitraums werden Sie Einblicke in verschiedene Bereiche einer internationalen Galerie erhalten.

    Dabei erwarten Sie unter anderem die folgenden Aufgaben:

    • Unterstützung der Künstlerbetreuer: Recherchen, Ausstellungsvorbereitungen.
    • Pflege der Künstlerarchive, wie beispielsweise Aktualisierung der Künstlerbiographien und Bibliographien, Arbeiten mit der Ausstellungs-, Werk- und Literatur-Datenbank.
    • Allgemeine Galerietätigkeiten einschliesslich Unterstützung des Front Desk und Aushilfe bei Mailouts.
    • Unterstützung bei den Messevorbereitungen.

    Vorrausetzungen:

    • Sehr gute Deutsch- und Englischkenntnisse.
    • Sehr gute Kommunikationsfähigkeit (mündlich und schriftlich).
    • Organisiertes, selbstständiges Arbeiten mit der Fähigkeit Prioritäten zu setzen.
    • Belastbar und flexibel.
    • Gute Computerkenntnisse (Mac und MS Office).
    • Abgeschlossenes Studium im Kunst- oder Kulturbereich oder berufliche Erfahrung im Galeriewesen von Vorteil.
